C'est La Vie- Coping During Covid

Updated: Nov 11, 2020

It is interesting how much things have changed in the last few months. We have gone from a place of 'go as you please' to 'restricted' or 'go at your own risk'. Whatever the case may be this virus has impacted most of our lives tremendously. A situation like this calls for us to adapt as human beings and reevaluate our own perspective on life and how the world works. By now, most people have either had to work from home or enroll in online school. While we do not know when we will be able to assume any level of real normalcy, it is best to adapt because doing the opposite may prove to be futile.

Your Emotional/Mental State

If you do nothing else, please take care of your mental health. It is what keeps you grounded. Coping during Covid is not easy though especially if you have been laid off or you have to now attend school online. Even transitions can cause stress. Not to mention lack of motivation and the thought of everything going askew if you happen to get sick. There are many factors lurking around every corner with the potential to deteriorate your mental health. It is important that you take note of these things and stop them in their tracks. You have to rely on yourself and come out of this being a stronger and better version of yourself.

How to Cope During Covid

Coping during Covid will rely heavily on your mindset. Having a sound mental state during this time may be somewhat difficult to achieve because of all the uncertainties but with these tips in you can make it happen.

Accept the present situation for what it is. Yes, that means understanding that there are things that you will not be able to change or fix. You can only work on the things that affect you directly. Simply put, stay grounded in your reality. Covid is happening and may continue to happen but life for you goes on. Do not sit and wait for it to stop so that you can continue living.

Know and learn the facts about the virus. Do not believe every bit of information that you receive. Pick sense out of nonsense. Buying into every news story can cause undue stress which breaks down your immune system, making you more susceptible to becoming ill. Use wisdom, question things and do your own research. Being educated about the facts will help to give you peace of mind. Ensure that your practice good hygiene, always have at least a full months worth of the essential items you need and filter well to protect your mental health.

Practice mindfulness. Be present at all times with the people you are around, the work that you are doing and even the movie that you're watching. Get into it. Live it. It's happening now and this is what you have. Meditation and positive visualization also helps with mindfulness as in they both help you to clear your mind and focus on the good things in your life.

There will be difficult days when everything seems to fall through and everyone disappoint. Those days are hard and this is where you will have to rely on you. How do you rely on yourself? By feeding yourself of course. You have to build yourself up in order to be in a healthy state of mind. Take care of your physical health through exercise and a nutrient rich diet. Find uplifting books to read/movies to watch. Use motivational quotes to boost your state of mind.

Take the time to know yourself, what you like, dislike and will not tolerate. For every negative thought, ask yourself what is the positive side of this? Focus on that. Now is actually the perfect time to upgrade or reinvent or detox. Do what you like to do or what you have always wanted within the realms of health and safety. Remove toxic things from your life. This can be in the form of people, things, jobs etc. It's always interesting how people will tell you to remove that person from your because they are toxic but not quit that toxic job that is doing more harm than good. Toxicity does not happen overnight, which means you have time to come up with an exit strategy. During the difficult days be patient with yourself and give yourself the opportunity to appreciate what you have accomplished so far. Remember the small things. Did you make your bed today? Were you able to complete a task on time? Did you have that one difficult conversation or call to check on a friend/family member? Whatever it may be, you have to give yourself something to be happy about each day.

It sometimes helps to help others. Give a meal to a homeless person on the street or create useful informative content that will helps other. That way it takes your mind off of your current situation. Being in nature has wonderful benefits. Get some sun, walk outside barefoot, plant some flowers or just observe the beauty all around you. Giving yourself projects and tasks also helps to shift your focus in a positive way. During this entire quarantine, my goal has been to be more active on my website. So far I have managed to write an entire course, a few blog posts plus an eBook! What is your goal?
