B players are those employees who stick around when the going gets tough and know the deep history of the organization. They are said to be the "heart and soul" of the company. They make up a large percentage of the organization and are extremely loyal without the need for recognition and they do not complain about their work. B players are often more secure in their objectives while exuding confidence in their capabilities because they know exactly where they want to go. They need less feedback and therefore, they don't want hand-holding.
3 Reasons Management Should show more Interest in B Players
1. They have more longevity- B players are more likely to stick with a company when it downsizes, go through major upgrades or undergo a merger. In my opinion, managers must seek team players in an organization because this will undoubtedly reflect on the company’s turn over rate. B players are committed to the company and this is an important aspect of employee retention. Unlike A players who are quickly to jump ship after receiving an offer for more money or incentives. Managers should prioritize those employees who are able to weather the storm and come out fighting to stay in the company and foster its development for the long-term.
2. They know the history and value of the company and its objectives- Knowing and understanding the history of a company is important as it means that these B players are versed in the organizations culture and are aware of its policies and procedures. They also require less training and development in this area as they are already familiar with how things are done. B Players also know out-rightly what the company goals are and how to work towards them.
3. They do most of the work and are consistent- B Players form the backbone of productivity and service in an organization. They do most of the work and the hardest part of the work so that everyone else has an easier job. Often times they do not feel the need to complain or feel the need for recognition for a task that they have completed as they see it as following through with the duties in their job description and striving towards the company goals. Their work is not sub-par but consistent and they are highly dedicated to their job. It is for these reasons that managers should pay closer attention to B Players.
Managers should prioritize those employees who are able to weather the storm and come out fighting to stay in the company and foster its development for the long-term.
Managers who are interested in meeting and exceeding company objectives and expectations should show far more interest in B Players as they are the foundation of the organization, the most committed and versed in the workplace culture which tend to be in line with the long-term goals of the company.
