Overcoming Challenges in the Workplace Through HRM

Using Human Resource Management to Manage Employees

Human Resource is specifically about people and their interaction with each other, policies and the many aspects of the organization including employee morale. It considers the hiring, training, administration/ management of individuals or a team of people. A Human Resource (HR) Manager takes on various roles in doing their jobs and therefore often times face difficulties.

Effective HRM strategies can be used to overcome workplace challenges

Some of these difficulties include:

Compliance with Laws and Regulations. As a HRM we must be aware of the new employee laws and updates especially those concerning our area of business. HRM’s can arm themselves by becoming aware of state and federal labor laws as well as following the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Law Guide to avoid lawsuits and audits.

Workplace Diversity- Diversity whether in terms of culture, age, ethnicity or language can be a real challenge and can cause great communication barriers. HRM’s should ensure that they possess cultural intelligence, mindfulness and strong leadership to handle any situation that may arise. They should also be able to train individuals about diversity and model expected behavior. Failure to protect an employee from harassment or hate speech could result in a hefty lawsuit.

Workplace Training and Development- “Investing in the training and development of lower-level employees is another common HR problem. Some businesses have trouble finding the resources to do so. Employees on the front lines are some of your hardest workers, and may not have the time to take a training course” (Atlas Staffing, n.d). HRM’s will have to become creative in engaging their employees and helping them to develop the necessary organizational and social skills so that the company can experience continuous growth.

Compensation- This a huge problem as “many companies are struggling with how best to structure employee compensation. Small businesses have to compete not only with businesses of a similar size, but also with corporations with big payroll budgets” (Atlas Staffing, n.d). Having a reward system or giving praise is a great way to help make up for a lack of funding to increase employee salary.

Retaining Talented Employees- Having a high employee turnover has a negative impact on business. Not only that but it prevents other talents from wanting to join the company. Having a structure in place from the get-go is essential so employees know what to expect but the most important thing it to follow through with that structure to ensure the quality of employee experience.
